The Netherlands is committed internationally to nuclear ships

3 Sept 2025

The Dutch government has taken a pioneering step in maritime innovation by partnering with the European Union to lead the development of regulations for nuclear-powered ships. This initiative aligns with the Maritime Manufacturing Industry sector agenda, which aims to revitalize Dutch shipbuilding. Central to this movement is Allseas, a Delft-based offshore company renowned for its vessel Pioneering Spirit, which plans to develop a small nuclear reactor within five years to power large offshore ships. The company views nuclear energy as the only viable path to meet sustainability goals in maritime transport. Their reactor, developed in collaboration with TU Delft, TNO, and the shipowners' association KVNR, is expected to be ready by 2030, although legal maritime deployment will only be possible after regulatory changes anticipated in 2032. Until then, the reactor will be used on land. The Dutch government's commitment to updating legislation not only supports Allseas’ ambitions but also reinforces its leadership in sustainable maritime technology. The KVNR has welcomed this move, emphasizing the importance of nuclear energy in achieving long-term environmental goals. This strategic alignment between industry and government marks a significant milestone in the future of clean energy shipping.
