At the 2025 International Chemical and Product Tanker Conference, industry leaders from SeaTec and OSM Thome explored decarbonisation strategies for tanker shipping. SeaTec’s Tino Rizzo emphasized immediate operational improvements—like hull maintenance and retrofits—as crucial for reducing emissions, warning against waiting for future fuels. He highlighted the importance of vessel-specific solutions and collaboration across the value chain. Meanwhile, OSM Thome’s Torbjorn Lie advocated for nuclear propulsion, citing its long-term potential and virtually unlimited energy supply. He pointed to promising technologies such as molten salt and gas-cooled reactors, though acknowledged regulatory and public perception hurdles. Both experts agreed that no single solution exists, and a mix of short-term efficiency and long-term innovation is essential for meeting environmental goals and ensuring fleet competitiveness.
