The "Review Committee of Nuclear Energy Utilization in Maritime Industries" was launched in Japan on December 1, 2024, under The Japan Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers (JASNAOE). Led by Taiga Mitsuyuki, an Associate Professor at Yokohama National University, the committee aims to explore the feasibility, safety, and environmental impact of nuclear energy in the maritime sector. This initiative is part of efforts to achieve carbon neutrality in the shipping industry, which significantly contributes to global greenhouse gas emissions. The committee will operate for two years, focusing on the potential benefits of nuclear-powered ships, such as reduced fuel consumption and lower emissions, while addressing challenges like public perception and regulatory hurdles. The findings could significantly impact maritime transportation, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change and promote sustainability.
