October Newsletter: Maritime Nuclear Moves Closer to Reality

5 Oct 2026

Welcome,

A spectacular setting, an exceptional audience and a shared ambition to advance maritime nuclear. On 9 September, NEMO and the Nuclear Institute brought together leading voices from across the nuclear and maritime sectors for their inaugural Industry Conference and Gala Dinner at Trinity House.

Joining 181 Members States, NEMO attended the 70th IAEA General Conference from 14-18 September to participate in five days of discussions and events, in Vienna, Austria. In connection, NEMO also participated as part of the UK delegation at the IAEA General Conference alongside representatives from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), the Department for Business and Trade (DBT) and others. Alongside these events, I joined an industry roundtable with Michael Shanks MP, Minister of State at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, and Ambassador Sonia Farrey, UK Permanent Representative to the United Nations, where I called for a coordinated UK maritime nuclear strategy before joining a meeting with representatives for the U.S. government to discuss the need for more international cooperation. At the UK Stand I presented NEMO’s presentation “Enabling the Maritime Nuclear Future,” where I was joined by our Chairman, Dr. Mamdouh el-Shanawany to take questions from the audience.
