The United Kingdom has taken a major step toward strengthening global nuclear safety and cooperation by officially acceding to the Convention on Supplementary Compensation for Nuclear Damage (CSC) on 3 October 2025. This move marks a significant milestone, as the UK becomes the first country under the Paris Convention to join the CSC, bridging legal frameworks across the Paris and Vienna regimes and expanding treaty relations globally.
The CSC, a key international treaty adopted under the IAEA, aims to ensure prompt, adequate, and non-discriminatory compensation in the event of nuclear incidents. By joining, the UK enhances its commitment to climate change mitigation, energy security, and economic development through safe nuclear energy.
Starting 1 January 2026, the UK will be the 12th Contracting Party, helping extend CSC coverage to around 190 nuclear reactors worldwide, nearly 45% of all operational reactors.
