Nuclear is now part of EMSA's alternative energy strategy.

3 Dec 2024

Carlos Pereira from EMSA, highlighted during a workshop conducted at the organisation's Lisbon headquarters on November 26 that the organisation started a study on the possibilities for nuclear-electric ships in response to several requests from Member States and industry stakeholders.

With an emphasis on small-scale modular nuclear fission reactors, Pereira introduced the first Nuclear Power Study, which is scheduled for publication soon. According to him, the study would cover sustainability, appropriateness, and safety issues, in keeping with previous EMSA investigations into alternative fuels.

The best reactor technology, nuclear fuel types, nuclear material management, and regulations are among the topics covered.

In order to learn more about significant advancements in the field of alternative fuels, maritime stakeholders from throughout the EU, including Member States, industry, and academia, gathered for the third EMSA workshop on alternative fuels and power solutions for ports and shipping.

Studies on ammonia, hydrogen, and biofuels that EMSA has already commissioned were presented and debated at the workshop in late November. Finding out what is available, how developed it is, and what has to be done to facilitate the adoption of alternative fuels and technologies is the goal of EMSA.

EMSA first presented on two new deliverables during the workshop in late November: nuclear power and synthetic fuels. One presentation summarised the key conclusions of the recent study on e-Fuels. The workshop also heard that EMSA plans to do study on carbon capture in 2025, and that further work is required on ammonia and hydrogen.
