"Nuclear power will be in the spotlight in the fight against climate change at COP29," Parviz Shahbazov, Minister of Energy of Azerbaijan, wrote on X (formerly Twitter). He made the comments in connection with a ministerial meeting discussing the role of nuclear power in the global energy transition.

Azerbaijan will host the 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) from 11-22 November.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is looking forward to build on the momentum from COP28. “After spending nearly three decades on the sidelines of the annual conference, nuclear energy was finally recognized” last year in Dubai, the agency said, adding: “The message at COP28 was clear: global efforts to achieve net zero must include an expansion of nuclear power.”

Nuclear energy was, for the first time, explicitly recognized as one of the tools to achieve “deep, rapid and sustained reductions in greenhouse gas emissions” in the agreement adopted at the end of COP28.
The IAEA said the world will need to harness all available solutions to triple nuclear capacity by 2050, noting that emerging technologies like SMRs and microreactors — including novel designs with innovative fuels and coolants — will play a significant role.
Nuclear energy solutions will be discussed at several side-events at COP29, and in the exhibition areas. The World Nuclear Association has announced that the Net Zero Nuclear Pavilion will be hosting events throughout COP29. More than 120 nuclear industry stakeholders from all over the world signed the Net Zero Nuclear Industry Pledge at COP28, hot on the heels of the “Declaration to Triple Nuclear Energy” launched by 22 countries at COP 28.
