New guidelines published by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission are expected to facilitate the licencing procedure for innovative nuclear reactor designs that are not conventional. The Department of Energy's Office of Nuclear Energy states that the recommendations should greatly minimise the regulatory uncertainties for novel reactor ideas.The updated guidelines are regarded as a critical first step towards developing a new, effective, and affordable procedure for granting licences for non-light water reactors.
Jason Andrus, Technical Lead for "TICAP" (Technology Inclusive Content of Application Project) at Idaho National Laboratory said;
"I’d like to thank our industry partners, led by Southern Company Services, along with DOE, and the NRC for achieving this milestone. Endorsement of this guidance allows for a more efficient and clear licensing application and review process for advanced reactors by focusing on what’s most important – safety.”
