Lloyd’s Register (LR) conducted a HAZID (Hazard Identification) workshop to assess risks and operational factors for integrating Modular Micro Reactor (MMR) nuclear technology into a stern landing craft vessel. The workshop, held at Seatransport’s headquarters in Australia, involved collaboration with Seatransport and Deployable Energy, bringing together international experts.
Key topics included:
Risk management and safety systems
Regulatory and certification pathways
Vessel design and operational readiness
The concept involves powering a 73-meter vessel with two MMRs, enabling 8–10 years of operation without refueling, and providing shore power during docking or emergencies.
Leaders from LR, Seatransport, and Deployable Energy emphasized the potential of MMRs to:
Reduce fossil fuel dependence
Enable clean, scalable energy
Support remote and emergency operations
The initiative aims to make nuclear-powered commercial vessels viable and widespread by 2030.
