IAEA Chief Promotes Nuclear-Powered Shipping in Greece

Rafael Mariano Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), met with Greek officials and shipowners in Athens to discuss the future use of nuclear power in commercial shipping. The talks centered around the IAEA’s new initiative, ATLAS (Atomic Technology Licensed for Applications at Sea), which aims to create a regulatory and safety framework for using nuclear reactors on cargo vessels.

Greece, as one of the world’s largest ship-owning nations, plays a key role in this conversation. While nuclear propulsion is currently limited to military vessels, Grossi emphasized the potential for civilian use, despite challenges like high costs, regulatory hurdles, and safety concerns related to terrorism and geopolitical risks.
