Classification society DNV has granted Approval in Principle (AiP) to HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) for its innovative nuclear-powered containership design. The 15,000 TEU vessel concept integrates a molten salt reactor (MSR), developed in collaboration with the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI), marking a significant step toward zero-emission shipping. The MSR offers enhanced safety and efficiency, operating at lower pressures and higher temperatures than traditional reactors, and is designed to meet IMO’s decarbonization goals. HD KSOE’s design also includes advanced shielding and safety systems to ensure secure maritime operation. DNV’s AiP confirms the concept meets key safety and feasibility standards, paving the way for further development and potential commercialization. This milestone reflects growing industry interest in nuclear propulsion as a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels, especially for long-haul container shipping. HD KSOE plans to continue refining the design with regulatory bodies and stakeholders to bring nuclear-powered vessels closer to reality. For more details, click here
