Allseas, a Dutch offshore services company, is exploring nuclear power to reduce emissions from its energy-intensive vessels. The company has launched a five-year program to develop small modular reactors (SMRs), specifically high-temperature gas-cooled reactors (HTGRs) producing around 25 MWe. These fourth-generation reactors use TRISO fuel, known for its high safety and resistance to extreme conditions. Allseas aims to finalize reactor designs within the first year, followed by prototype development and regulatory engagement with bodies like the Dutch ANVS, IMO, and IAEA. The company plans to begin production by 2030, initially for onshore use before adapting the technology for maritime deployment. This initiative supports Allseas’ goal of reducing emissions by 30% by 2030 and achieving net-zero operations by 2050. The reactors are designed to be passively safe and environmentally sustainable, with potential for fuel reprocessing and graphite reuse. By investing in nuclear technology, Allseas seeks to enhance energy autonomy and competitiveness in the offshore sector while contributing to global decarbonization effort.
