Former President Donald Trump has issued executive orders aimed at fast-tracking the deployment of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), compact nuclear units seen as vital for decarbonizing industry and revitalizing U.S. manufacturing.
The orders direct the Department of Energy to authorize three SMR pilot projects, targeting operational readiness by July 4, 2026. The Department of Defense is also tasked with commissioning its own reactor within three years, emphasizing nuclear’s strategic role.
A major regulatory overhaul requires the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to license micro and modular reactors within 18 months, significantly reducing approval timelines. This benefits advanced designs like the Molten Chloride Fast Reactor (MCFR), developed by TerraPower, Southern Company, and CORE POWER—ideal for maritime use due to its passive safety and liquid fuel.
To support innovation, the National Reactor Innovation Center (NRIC) is launching the LOTUS facility, enabling experimental reactors up to 500 kW thermal. It will host the Molten Chloride Reactor Experiment (MCRE), a key step toward commercialization.
The Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is advocating for updated radiation standards, while the Senate confirmed David A. Wright as NRC Chair. Events like ARGO in Athens and New Nuclear for Maritime in Washington, D.C. will explore nuclear’s role in clean energy and industrial renewal.
