ABB teams up with Blykalla for maritime reactor development

12 Sept 2025

This agreement expands on an MoU first established in October 2024, which focused on advancing lead-cooled SMR technology to support Sweden’s clean energy ambitions. The renewed partnership comes at a time when the maritime industry is increasingly looking to nuclear power as a practical pathway to decarbonisation.

In June, the International Maritime Organization (IMO), through its Maritime Safety Committee (MSC 110), endorsed recommendations to update the Code of Safety for Nuclear Merchant Ships. The proposed revisions are intended to reflect modern developments in nuclear technology, including SMRs, since the Code was originally introduced.

Commenting on the announcement, Blykalla CEO Jacob Stedman said: “We are pleased to broaden our collaboration with ABB in this strategically significant area. With our compact reactor design, we see a unique opportunity to lead in maritime nuclear propulsion — a solution well-suited to the sector’s clean energy needs. Delivering on this vision will require a strong ecosystem of partners, and this agreement represents an important step forward.”

Blykalla’s flagship design, the Swedish Advanced Lead Reactor (SEALER), is a compact, passively safe system built with inherent safety characteristics that eliminate the need for active operator intervention.
